It’s been said before, but a job interview really is very much like a date. It provides an opportunity for the hiring manager to get to know you. Not just your educational or professional background, but you as a person. Many people, when preparing for an interview
, focus too much attention on their resume and not enough on themselves. They try to imagine every possible question related to their resume and construct answers for them. This is certainly an important aspect of interview preparation, but don’t forget to consider your appearance and demeanor as well.
You can have the best possible resume for the open position, but if you dress sloppily or speak in a strange manner, you may well get bumped to the third or fourth alternate position for the job. After all, the company is looking to hire a person, not a resume. They’re looking for a person who can blend into the company culture and make a positive contribution. Anything that is likely to be an impediment to productivity for others at the company – you’re purple hair, short dresses, or cocky attitude for instance - will give the hiring manager pause in hiring you. So review your resume very carefully before going to interview, but also review your personal appearance and behavior and ask yourself if you’d hire someone like you. If the answer’s yes, you’re good to go.
